Latest News Postwatch issues reaction to closures Following its six-week consultation on post office closures in West Berkshire and Wiltshire, Post Office Ltd has today announced its decision on which branches in the area will close.
33 of the 36 post offices originally proposed for closure will close. The post offices will start to close from April 2008.
Postwatch scrutinised each of Post Office Ltd's proposals, encouraged customers to engage in the consultation process and worked to ensure Post Office Ltd took into account responses submitted. Following this, Postwatch has asked Post Office Ltd to review its proposals for the following three post offices:
Barkham Road Post Office, 22 Barkham Road, Wokingham, RG41 2XP
London Road Post Office, 107 London Road, Wokingham, RG40 1YD
The Obelisk Post Office, 35/37 Silver Street, Warminster, BA12 8PT
Additionally, there will be a further 8 post offices closed but will be replaced by outreach services (typically part-time services offered from a van or from within a local facility like a village hall). None of these post offices will close until its outreach replacement is in place.
However, we are requesting that Post Office Ltd review a further 3 post offices earmarked to be closed and replaced by outreach services:
Yatton Keynell Post Office, The Street, Yatton Keynell, Chippenham, SN14 7BA
Lacock Post Office, 12 High Street, Lacock, Chippenham, SN15 2LQ
Avebury Post Office, Hope Cottage, Avebury, Marlborough, SN8 1RF
Postwatch and Post Office Ltd will review these proposals in the weeks ahead.
Affected customers will be concerned that saved post offices will result in others being considered for closure. However, customers should understand that 2,500 closures will occur. The consultation process is not about reducing the number of closures, but Post Office Ltd trying to make sure the 2,500 that close are those that keep customer inconvenience to a minimum.
