Emergency workers at the canal where a body was recovered today

FIRE fighters helped police recover the body of a man from the Kennet and Avon Canal at Honeystreet last night.

They received a report of a body in the water just west of the Barge Inn at about 5pm.

Fire fighters from Pewsey assisted with the recovery of the body of a man who is believed to live on one of the narrow boats moored near the pub.

One boater said: "He had been drinking in the pub last night so it's possible he slipped into the canal on the way back to his boat."

It is the third death in similar circumstances in the last two years wi the bodies of men who had been drinking being recovered from the canal at Pewsey Wharf and at Great Bedwyn.

The Wiltshire Coroner David Masters was informed of yesterday's tragedy and will be holding an inquest.

Police said today that they were still trying to confirm the identity of the dead man.
