Royal honour for young carer

PEWSEY youngster Jake Amor was thrilled to be invited to a special reception at Buckingham Palace last week, where he was presented to the Princess Royal.

Jake, nine, is a member of the St John Ambulance youth section called the Badgers, and was invited to the reception hosted by the Princess, a patron of the organisation, in recognition of his care for his younger sister.

Val Bateman, Pewsey Division Badger leader, explained: "Jake is a wonderful boy who supports his whole family, helping to look after his two younger sisters.

"When the youngest, Lucie-Joy, two, has an epileptic seizure he knows exactly what to do and helps to comfort her.

"The family was recently told that they would need to use Makaton sign language so that they could communicate with her, so Jake immediately threw himself wholeheartedly into learning this.

Jake, who is a pupil at Pewsey Primary School, said: "It was very exciting to visit Buckingham Palace and I was very proud to meet Princess Anne.

"I started going to Badgers because my friends did. It is really fun and I have learnt lots of things."

Jake's mum, Claire, said she could hardly express how proud she was of her son.

She said: "At the beginning Lucie was having up to seven fits a day.

"Jake would sit with her and talk to her. Just be there for her.

"Lucie just idolises him and, of course, he helps me a lot as well."

Jake also helps look after his six-year-old sister Casey.

She suffers from bilateral valve palsy, which means she has to wear a hearing aid.

Jake's dad, Jamie, is a caretaker for the Harlequins learning support group.
