Wiltshire guns raise £250,000 for charity

THE memory of former Wiltshire High Sheriff Chris Eliot-Cohen lives on although he died from cancer 13 years ago.

His memory has been perpetuated by annual fund raising by his family with more than £1 million, largely for cancer charities, raised over the past six years The family owns Hilldrop Farm in Ramsbury where there was a massive event on Saturday that raised an estimated £250,000 with the lion's share going to Breast Cancer Haven and small amounts to local charities including Project 2005 for the village sports centre, Naomi House children's hospice, Ramsbury Scouts and Wiltshire Blind.

On top of that it has been revealed that one of the late Mr Eliot-Cohen's granddaughters, Tatty Bullard who lives in Newmarket, raised £122,000 by running in the London marathon.

She was possibly the youngest runner in the event, having turned 18 just four days previously, Tatty's mother Amanda has breast cancer and has received support from Breast Cancer Haven that has havens in London and Hereford and offers a support service for sufferers.

Tatty, a student, said: "I decided to run the marathon because I really like the idea of a challenge.

"After my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a second time I thought it would be great to support Breast Cancer Haven as they have been such a help to her."

Timothy Eliot-Cohen, one of the organisers of Saturday's events, said activities included the biggest charity clay pigeon shoot staged in the UK with more than 400 guns.

Teams of five, about half from London, were able to tackle a variety of clay pigeon disciplines ranging from high pheasant shooting, grouse, rabbit and woodcock, trying their hand on Roxon's rifle range and even blasting away at small Gnat remote controlled aircraft.

In the evening the explorer and broadcaster Bear Grylls who lives near Hungerford helped the family host a charity auction with a mass of donated prizes.

One lot, a weekend camping with the adventurer, went for £8,000.

The auction raised about £190,000 towards the day's total.

In the evening Hilldrop was the venue for Legends of Rock, with five tribute bands paying homage to Queen, Abba, Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart and Elvis Presley.

The day's events were brought to a close with a huge fireworks display.
