| LITTLE STARS: George Nicholson cuts the ribbon to open the new play park |
THERE was no shortage of celebrities to carry out the formal opening of a new playground at Great Bedwyn - the children themselves.
Storms had threatened to delay the opening on Thursday of the new children's play area on the village's Memorial Field.
But after just one or two heavy spots of rain, the sun shone so that the waiting children could cut the tape and try out the new equipment.
The children of all the parents who had helped raise £40,000 for the new playground were invited to carry out the opening ceremony.
George Nicholson, six, whose mother Karina was one of the leaders of the fundraising, had the honour of cutting a ribbon.
Then the adults had to stand back as the children rushed to have a go on the new equipment.
The new playground was the initiative of a group of parents who felt their children needed somewhere challenging but safe to play.
They were able to attract sponsorship from the Hills Group, Vodaphone, the National Lottery, the Community Foundation for Swindon,Berkshire Masonic Charity, the Mercers Society, Kennet District Council and Sarsen Housing.
A shortfall of £9,000 to complete the project was raised locally with a variety of fund raising activities.
Parish councillor Roger Drury hosted the opening ceremony in the absence of chairman Gordon Stone.
Coun Drury said: "The whole area has been refurbished and there is a whole lot of new equipment. The village could not have done this without our sponsors."
Coun Drury said it was felt entirely appropriate to ask the children themselves to be the celebrities of the afternoon and to carry out the opening ceremony.
