| Marlborough Riding for the Disabled has scooped £1,000 from Gannett |
FANTASTIC - that was how Riding for the Disabled instructor Eileen Devenish described the news that her group is getting a grant from the Gazette's parent company.
The Gannett Corporation's charitable wing gives out hundreds of thousands of pounds in grants every year.
One of the successful applicants this year has been the Marlborough Riding for the Disabled group that Mrs Devenish has been involved with for 23 years.
The Marlborough RDA group was set up at Wilton, near Great Bedwyn, with four ponies and four children. It then moved to Suddene Farm at Burbage where Mrs Devenish lives.
As numbers grew the group looked for bigger premises and Ken and Jilly Carter at Manton Grange, Marlborough, offered use of their indoor riding school.
Every Monday young people aged between five and 16 can be found enjoying riding around the covered ménage on ponies loaned to the RDA by supporters.
Mrs Devenish said the RDA depended entirely on donations for its income.
On hearing that its application to the Gannett fund had resulted in a £1,000 grant Mrs Devenish said: "That's excellentit's fantastic.
"We will be putting the money towards some games and gymkhana equipment."
The biggest beneficiary of this latest round of Gannet grants is the North Wiltshire fundraising group of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which is to receive £4,500.
A spokesman for the charity, which raises money for research into the incurable wasting disease, was delighted. "This is wonderful news," she said.
Family Mediation Service in Swindon was granted £1,066 and Swindon Talking Newspapers £1,540.
