IGHT ROYAL VIEW: Walkers take a break at the Scotchell nature reserve after enjoying a jaunt along the new King Alfred Trail

PEWSEY this week celebrates the completion of the first phase of the King Alfred Trail, an 11-mile path winding through the countryside.

The path is the brainchild of the Pewsey Area Community Trust, which has raised £120,000 towards the expected total cost of £500,000 of the wheelchair friendly trail.

The figure-of-eight trail will stretch between Honeystreet in the west and Wootton Rivers in the east.

The northern circle is all but complete and PACT is confident the southerly route will be finished in the next year or so.

Terry Kemp of PACT said: "The northern half is the more tricky one as it involves lots of dropped kerbs and signage.

"The southerly route will not be as difficult and we are confident of getting the rest of the funding in place before long."

The northern route winds through the village from the Wharf to the Scotchell nature reserve.

Mr Kemp said: "Many people have said how grateful they are that the access to the Scotchell has been improved so much."
