Marlborough 31st richest town
 |
| A survey says being situated beside Wiltshire's rolling chalk hills makes Marlborough a rich man's haven |
MARLBOROUGH is the 31st richest town in Britain, according to a new survey.
The list, drawn up by estate agents Savills in conjunction with the Daily Telegraph, concentrates largely on house prices, but it is a good indicator of the per capita wealth of its inhabitants.
Marlborough comes in at number 31, just above Windermere in Cumbria and ahead of places like Stow-in-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, and Dartmouth, Devon.
The average house price according to Savill's is £338,444 and 11 per cent of recent sales were over £500,000.
The blurb accompanying Marlborough's entry says: "Set beside the Savernake Forest and the rolling chalk of Wiltshire where early man cut white horses into the hillsides, this is a rich man's haven.
"The town, dominated by the co-ed liberal public school, is close enough to Pewsey, where commuters catch the train and be in Paddington in just over an hour, and it has a good range of specialist shops.
"The Polly Tea Rooms, voted by Country Life a the finest in England, are where everyone goes for sticky cakes.
"Rocker Pete Doherty has moved in, so the future looks interesting."
