Don’t say anything
Please Mr Gray please don't rain on our parade (letters, May 1).
Stuart Peace is the perfect person to cut the first turf as building work starts at on the long awaited new St John's School. Staff, the school's Family and Friends PTA group and pupils, are thrilled that Mr Pearce is able to help us celebrate a momentous occasion.
As coach of the England Football under 21s, Mr Pearce knows all about young people. He lives within our school's catchment area and is a father. His involvement is
already attracting national interest. We need support from outside the Marlborough area if the PTA is going to raise the funds it hopes to - money to buy equipment and resources to make the new school's facilities the best in the country.
A straw pole of year 7, 8 and 9 pupils from St John's found none who had heard of Mickey Dobie or Matron Blackwell. The office of Mayor of Marlborough is a venerable one but means little to the average 15 year-old or those from outside the town. Many pupils attending St John's are not Marlborough residents.
Mr Gray, in your letter you mentioned Squirrel Nutkin. In response we'll borrow a phrase from Thumper's mother, from Bambi: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
Karen Gardner,
Vice-Chair of St John's Family and Friends,
Wansdyke Road,
Great Bedwyn
