What will £5 buy?

Mr Justice Holman wants to see the proof that the people of Marlborough are supporting Val Compton's heroic struggle to save our hospital. He has capped her liability at £20,000.

There are almost 8,000 of us in our town. If only half of us sent Val £5 we could achieve the target. The same £5 would not even buy a packet of cigarettes these days. Neither would it buy you one gallon of petrol, which is barely sufficient to convey anyone to and from Trowbridge. Surely we would all rather donate a relatively small sum in the fight to save our MIU and day hospital facilities?
