A growing problem

May I appeal to owners of trees which border roads and footpaths, to examine them for excess covering by ivy. This menace is now widespread throughout the county and presents an increasing hazard to pedestrians and traffic. The extraordinary growth of this pernicious creeper has now resulted in extensive coverage of trees, walls and hedges.

The danger arises from the mass of foliage and its weight, particularly high up in trees. In high winds and rain there is every likelihood that trees will be brought down and this situation can be seen across the county. In our local vicinity there are particularly serious examples in Church Road, Derry Hill, Sandy Lane and the road from Blacklands to the North Wilts Golf Club.

Few people appear to have recognised this growing danger, but once it has been brought to people's notice, it is apparent that the problem is widespread. I believe that immediate action is required before a tragic accident occurs.

As trees develop their leaves, the windage aloft will considerably increase the problem.
