Keep on writing
11:19am Friday 2nd May 2008
on the letter of Joan King last week about Robbie Hayter's "inconsequential" letters. Having lived in Devizes all my life, my sister and I and lots of our friends look forward to these articles. We all grew up in the Avenues and went to school together. It's nice to read his views and to reminisce about Devizes as it was then, a nice quiet little town, with a real community spirit.

I'm sure Mrs King must be in a minority to think that the letters sent by your regular contributor are "inconsequential".

Data protection madness on lost items

Mr Hayter is right to be concerned by the way the police now deal with lost and found property.

I cannot understand the opposition to the Asda store coming to Chippenham. I go to Swindon to shop at Asda.

Thank you for giving such prominence to Sheldon School's outstanding Ofsted report last week. It was great to see good news about education on the front page.

A growing problem

May I appeal to owners of trees which border roads and footpaths, to examine them for excess covering by ivy. This menace is now widespread throughout the county and presents an increasing hazard to pedestrians and traffic. The extraordinary growth of this pernicious creeper has now resulted in extensive coverage of trees, walls and hedges.

Consultation should involve the gypsies

I attended the North Wiltshire District Council meeting on gypsy sites.

"New and improved." That's the ever-ready slogan in America, where I come from, and a standing joke around my house in Devizes, where we know that often it ain't so.

Further to your story about the Quakers Walk development, we would like to point out that it is an important issue for all the Devizes and Roundway councillors. Both members of the regulatory committee attended the public consultation on April 21, where we noted the comments from the general public, and will actively take them on board.
