Determined Brad Buechel is hosting the first Wiltshire's Strongest Person competition in memory of his younger brother who died in February.

The charity event in the Olympiad Leisure Centre in Chippenham takes place on Saturday. Mr Buechel, 22, of Eastern Avenue, came up with the idea shortly after 19-year-old Rick died from incurable heart disease.

All the money raised will go towards the Naomi House hospice, which cared for Rick.

Mr Buechel said: "Rick loved anything to do with families getting together and having fun and one of his favourite TV programmes was Gladiators. People cope in different ways when you lose someone but I wanted to do this as a thank you to Naomi House for all their help.

"The support I have had while organising this has been immense and so many local businesses have backed me.

"I think it will be a great way for people to get together and have fun while raising money for such a great cause."

As well as sponsorship from local businesses, Mr Buechel has bagged support from international brands such as Lucozade and Hilton Hotels.

He has also managed to get sponsorship and prize donations from MET-Rx, a nutrition products company that sponsors TV's The World's Strongest Man competition.

The Olympiad contest, which is open to men and women, will feature bench press, dead lift, squat and dip their own body weight in a series of heats.

Prizes range from a night in any Hilton Hotel in the UK and hundreds of pounds worth of MET-Rx sports supplements.

As well as the competition, there will be a number of children's activities on and two local bands providing music.

Mr Buechel said: "This is a great way to get women involved as we want it to be more equal than the World's Strongest Man.

"My mum is over the moon with what I am doing and I am getting so much support from all my family. I really hope that this becomes an annual event."

Anyone hoping to take part in the competition, which starts at 9am for competitors and 10.30am for spectators, should call Mr Buechel on 07853 828517 or email him: gold_coast81@hotmail.com.
