New Calne Mayor puts focus on youth
Mercy Baggs is Calne Mayor for the second time
Mercy Baggs is Calne Mayor for the second time

New Calne Mayor Mercy Baggs has chosen young people's charities for her appeal in the coming year.

The grandmother of four, who lives in Quemerford, hopes to improve facilities for teenagers in Calne.

Coun Baggs, 76, who was mayor in 1998, has picked White Horse Junior Football Club, Calne Cricket Club and the Drop in Centre.

She describes herself as a community councillor rather than a political one, and says she will work with anyone who wants the best for the town.

She moved to Calne 22 years ago and was one of the driving forces behind the teenage drop in centre in Wood Street where she is a volunteer.

She was also a governor at Priestley School for 11 years.

She said it was particularly important to raise money for equipment for the cricket club which is moving to Beversbrook.
