Chippenham police enquiry staff glad to be back

It is business as usual for the newly re-opened Chippenham police station enquiry office.

The public office, which was opened two weeks ago after been controversially shut last year, is running as smoothly as ever.

One member of staff said: "We are all absolutely thrilled that the office is back open and the feedback from the public has been great.

"There are still a number of people are not aware we are back open so hopefully as time goes on more people will realise.

"There are a number of reasons why people come into us from handing in important documents to reporting crimes.

"The office is also a great point of contact with the community with people coming in and asking directions or wanting information if they are new to the area.

"I am sure that we will be busy again soon and things will go back to the way they were.

"I have worked in enquiry offices for five years and I think they are an essential part of neighbourhood policing."

The enquiry offices in Chippenham, Trowbridge and Marlborough were shut last year after Wiltshire Police felt they were under-utilised with more people reporting crimes over the telephone.

People living in the town immediately attacked the decision along with councillors who felt the enquiry centre was a lifeline for many people.

The Chippenham enquiry office, on Wood Lane, is now open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Anyone wishing to report a crime should call Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000.
