ASDA today started its appeal to build a new store in Chippenham but still face strong opposition from the council and public.
The retail giant wants to build a new store on Langley Park, complete with 192 houses. But has gone to appeal after its initial application was turned down in June last year.
Now the public appeal, which is expected to last nine days, opened at North Wiltshire District Council this morning and the firm still faces opposition to their proposals for Foundry Lane.

The Council and railway signalling company Westinghouse, who are based at Langley Park, are opposed to the plans.
Local residences and councillors also feel strongly against the proposals by ASDA.
Councillor Paul Darby, who represents Hill Rise Ward, said: "They say it will create jobs but it will draw jobs up from the town centre."
In his opening statement, Simon Randle Q.C, speaking for the council, said: "This appeal has the potential to decide the future of this area in Chippenham.
"This is very important for the future of the town because the local authority believe there are strong reasons for the refusal of the applications."
But Christopher Lockhart-Mummery Q.C, representing ASDA, added his clients felt a new store would benefit the town.
He said: "The appeal proposals represent a high quality development, which will deliver welcome regeneration to this part of Chippenham."

Good luck ASDA, Sainsburys and Morrisons over the past few years seem to have become very expensive. hopefully with ASDA in the town the rest will lower their prices.

Who needs more supermarkets and why do some people think that's all you need in a "growing town"?
The area where ASDA are planning their supermarket would be better used to provide amenities such as multiplex cinema, ice-rink, swimming pool (not a "fun" pool), bowling alley, skatepark, laserzone etc.

Paul Tucker - i agree wholeheartedly with you. Chippenham is crying out for leisure facilities. What have we got to choose from at the moment? There's the cinema which - although they try their best - is pretty limited. Apart from that it's a journey into Bath or Swindon. I'm sure a top notch leisure facility would bring people into the town too, especially being next to the train station.
Of course, this is all fantasy stuff.

Chippenham used to have a world class outdoor pool, until the council decided to shut it. Lets get ASDA in, and maybe with all the savings people make when all other lower prices then we can all afford to start spending money on leisure.

Have they actually tried driving round there at all? It's bad enough at the roundabouts as it is without hundreds of extra cars trying to get to Asda. I had a look at the plans for the new road layout and there is some fantastic artistic license on road widths. Extra lanes seem to appear out of nowhere.

Thats nothing to be proud of mate ;)
Anyway - Chippenham doesnt need an Asda. We dont need "extra competition" to lower prices - it's cheap enough. If your skint then shop at Iceland - they give away loads of stuff in meal deals. Well they advertise that they do anyway - Iv never been in.
Chippenham Town Centre is dying. The car parking cost is killing trade (look how easy it is to get a spot on a saturday now as opposed to a few years ago ...). I would rather support our local traders than a corporate monstosity like Asda.
If Chippenham Town continues it's decline there will be nothing left apart from charity and mobile phone shops. Who wants that? Not me!

Chippenham does not need anymore supermarkets! We need entertainment, there is nothing for anyone to do unless they get on the train or spend time in the pubs drinking!
Surely the council would like a town people are proud to live in and want to spend there money.

All we can do is put pressure on the council and the public hearing to tell them what [bold]WE[/bold] want.

So that's another few businesses shafted by this proposal.
Btw, do people realise that since the County Council have agreed that the plans for the new traffic layout are OK, the District is unable to use traffic as grounds for the appeal?
