Ex council chair and mayor dies
David Godwin
David Godwin

DAVID Godwin, a former mayor of Devizes and chairman of Kennet District Council, has died at the age of 74.

Kennet councillors stood in silence during Tuesday's annual council meeting in his memory. Retiring council chairman, Coun Paula Winchcombe, gave a valedictory speech.

Mr Godwin was Devizes born and bred and a British Telecom engineer by profession but he will be best known for his civic work.

He was the first mayor of Devizes after it ceased to be a borough council and represented Devizes South on the new Kennet District Council from 1979 to 1995.

He was chairman of the council from 1993 to 1995 just as great changes were taking place and moving it firmly towards the 21st century. He retired from the council in 1995.

Coun Charles Winchcombe, with whom he shared the Devizes South ward, said: "He was very conscientious, easy to get on with and very kind hearted.

"When he was chairman of housing, Kennet was taken to the Ombudsman over a housing matter and David went round there with a bouquet of flowers and apologised to the lady. He was a highly respected councillor."

Mark Boden, chief executive said: "He was a very able councillor and as a senior member of Kennet played a leading role in bringing the council into the modern world."
