A Calne community group is calling on people to pick up their phones and vote for it to win a share of £7.8 million.

The Castlefields Canal and River Park Association (CARP) has reached the final of The People's Millions Lottery TV contest and will make a plea for funds to improve Calne on ITV West on November 26.

The group will go head to head in a public vote with another good cause, The Waterways Trust, Gloucestershire, which hopes to restore the walls of an 18th century canal port in the Cotswolds.

Each night for one week, two projects will battle it out, with five winning part of the £7.8 million.

CARP has pledged to spend the money restoring Castlefields Park near the centre of Calne and has already completed several projects.

The money from the People's Millions Fund will be used to improve the Castle Mound area by clearing an overgrown garden to allow better access for the community and improving a paved area for outdoor concerts, picnics and barbecues.

CARP's bid co-ordinator Bill Rowlands said this was a chance to make a positive difference to the community, which would benefit both Calne and Wiltshire as a whole.

The aim of the contest is to fund projects that improve the quality of life of local communities.
