A former Big Brother contestant has alleged he was targeted in a homophobic slur during a charity event in Swindon.

Big Brother 5 star Dan Bryan was the DJ at the Revolution Vodka Bar on Friday night when an incident happened at about 1am.

The 33-year-old from Hull packed up his records and walked out during his second one-hour set after an argument over a black bowler hat.

Dress code for the Bridge Street venue dictates nobody should wear a hat inside the bar but Dan said he believed the issue went deeper than that.

"The punters were lovely to me, it was the attitude by staff that got to me," said Dan, who is famed for wearing hats.

"I couldn't believe I was being treated the way I was and over a hat. They asked me to take it off but I refused. If I go to a venue that tells me I can't wear a hat, I refuse to go in.

"I was forced to go in Revolution because I was booked to do so and I didn't know they would extend the stupid hat policy to a booked DJ who they knew anyway.

"They even had posters stuck up on their walls advertising the event which showed me wearing a hat, so what did they expect?

"After I walked out my friend heard one of the bouncers saying what a bunch of queers', and then told me later.

"It seemed to all make sense after that."

Dan, who finished in third place in the 2004 show, also works as a hairdresser and is lead singer with electro-disco band the Icehouse Project.

He was at the Swindon venue with Big Brother 6's Vanessa McIntosh, who lasted 50 days before being evicted in 10th place.

The bar showed the Big Brother final on large TV screens in a champagne reception celebration to mark the last show, with the proceeds from the GWR-supported night going to charity.

Capital Radio's head of press and public relations, Claire Berry, said: "The charity event went very well and we raised £650 for GWR Kids, and we really appreciate Dan's continued support of the charity.

"The issues are between Dan and the club and we do not wish to comment further regarding the allegations."

Rob Ward, who has managed the Revolution bar in Swindon for just a week, said: "I am unable to comment."

A spokesman for Wiltshire police said: "We can confirm an incident was reported of homophobic abuse at Revolution in Swindon on Saturday morning.

"Inquires are continuing and we urge any witnesses to contact Wiltshire Police."
