CCTV controllers in Calne are appealing for more volunteers to help monitor the town's seven-camera network.

Currently seven people watch the camera day and night but Community Development Officer Mark Wilkins says that is not enough.

Mr Wilkins said: "At present a small number of keen local volunteers help to monitor the system.

"We would like to hear from anyone interested in working in the later part of the evening or early hours of the morning.

"The more people we can call upon the less onerous the job is for everyone"

The job of a CCTV operator is to monitor the cameras, and to record and report incidents when they happen.

Volunteers are trained in how to operate the CCTV equipment and communicate directly with police when an incident occurs.

Volunteers must complete a formal application form and references and Police checks are taken before they can begin training on the system.

Mr Wilkins said: "Volunteers are absolutely essential to the running of our CCTV scheme and without them the system would be purely reactive rather than proactive."

For an application form contact Calne Information Centre on (01249) 814000.
