A Corsham School student’s dream of musical stardom is one step closer after she beat thousands of hopefuls at Open Mic UK.

Sixth former Amy-Rose Charlesworth, 16, got the thumbs up from judges for her rendition of Lady Gaga’s The Edge of Glory during her audition at St George’s concert hall in Bristol.

Now she’s hoping to drum up support from the local community for her repeat performance at the hall as part of the competition’s regional finals in the 16 and under category.

She said: “I’m really pleased to have got to this stage and now I’m practicing hard for the next stage of the competition.”

The regional final will take place on Sunday, September 30, with a place in the national finals at the O2 in London up for grabs.

At the event, the singer’s friends and family will be out in force to cheer her on and help fulfil an ambition Amy-Rose has had since she was a little girl.

She said: “Ever since I was young all I’ve wanted to do was sing, and at such a young age this is a great opportunity for me.

“I’ve had a lot of support from my family, especially my grandparents, and my friends, which has been really helpful.”

Amy-Rose has also been backed by Melksham drama and singing group Stagecoach, with whom she sings.

If she makes it through to the national final, Amy-Rose will have a chance to impress a host of representatives from record labels, national radio stations and entertainment agencies, taking her one step closer to being signed.

She said: “This competition is a step in the right direction.”

The organisers of the competition wished Amy-Rose luck in the next stage and are looking forward to seeing her perform.

Chris Grayston, events coordinator for Open Mic UK, said: “We are looking to find an act that has something unique to offer with both the ability to deliver a strong live performance but also potential to become a professional recording artist.

“There is so much talent out there, I’m sure we can find that star.”
