Staff and pupils at Corsham Primary School are celebrating today (Wednesday) after news that they have secured £1.35m in funding to transform buildings in their Pound Pill site.

The Academies Capital Maintenance Fund (Department for Education) has awarded the school the cash as part of a national campaign, where almost £250m in total is being allocated to 773 projects in 571 academies.

The successful bid, submitted in January, will see four mobile classrooms demolished to make way for a new Early Years Centre, two new Key Stage I classrooms, a library, a new Parent reception and administration area.

There will also be some internal changes made to create a small, second Hall.

Work is scheduled to begin as soon as possible, and due to be completed by April 2013.

The school's headteacher Fiona Allen said: "It’s the most brilliant, wonderful news.

"As teachers and the governing body, we are so relieved the bid has been successful, and we can now focus on an exciting new build – both for the children at our school now to enjoy, and future generations of our school.

"I think the children are even more excited than us. There were some very loud whoops and cheers at this morning’s assembly."

The new design has been approved and planning permission granted.

Work will now go out to tender and the school is determined that local tradesman and businesses should also benefit from this bid.

Mrs Allen added: "By using local architects, builders and traders, we can ensure this money will create employment locally and positively affect the families within our community."

Plans are available for viewing in the school office. Call the school on 01249 712387 to make arrangements.
