Euro 2012 diary: Day four

The party is getting started in Kiev The party is getting started in Kiev

Chippenham restaurant owners Doug and Sandie Webb are at Euro 2012 following England. Here's their latest diary instalment

So the following hours after leaving our temporary hotel we arrived in Kiev and began our search for the accommodation we had booked for the next three nights only to find the sat nav was not playing the game. Or so we thought.

After a few failed attempts, several aborted phone calls, a trip to the nearest airport that we assumed would allow an English conversation, and many more useless efforts, we gave up and booked into a lovely hotel for some much TLC assuming the receptionist would be able to point us in he right direction the next day.

So after a good nights sleep, the eve of our Kiev game came, and not even enlisting the help of an English speaker and a local taxi driver could unlock the mystery of the fantom hotel!

After another five hours of detective work we somehow found our way to the accommodation, which turned out to be at another address altogether!

To say that the Ukrainians are not welcoming is at times an understatement.

There are around twelve members of staff at the 10 roomed hotel - with us as the only occupants at this, the most prestigious time the country has experienced on the international stage. And they really do not want to know!

All, in all, this is a country that has no history of international tourism and one that will not inherit one from what is happening now, which is sad to note.

We are now sitting in the Fans Zone with a Norwegian English fan and for Swedish and the atmosphere makes up for all the effort.

Tonight Is an essential game that could show just how wise the F.A were in their choice of Manager. Come on England, we know we can do it

Football, the opium of the masses. For a boring, self-glorifying contribution contribution this one is hard to beat!

Having been to Kiev to watch football, this is the biggest load of old bull I have read ! The worst thing, there are taxi drivers ripping you off !!
Shock horror, people in another land speak their own language !! No little Englanders here !
Most Ukranians I encountered were friendly and helpful, and if they did not understand English, soon found someone who could converse !
Next time do your research before you get there, it is not difficult with the internet !
