eBook lending service launches in Wiltshire

Library users will have access to books day and night after Wiltshire Council launched its eBook service today (Tuesday).

Following demand, customers will now be able to download books electronically out of an initial selection of 1,500 titles ranging from popular novels for adults, as well as plenty of crime, a selection of books for children and teenagers, and non-fiction for adults including travel guides, cookery books and gardening books.

Customers use their library card number and PIN to download up to three books at a time by visiting wiltshire.lib.overdrive.com The downloaded books can be read on a PC, laptop, some mobile phones and dedicated eReaders, but not the Amazon Kindle.

Instead of having a due date, the downloaded book will simply expire after the loan period has finished. Any eBooks borrowed will not count towards people’s borrowing limit on their library card.

Cabinet member for libraries, Stuart Wheeler said: "We have listened to what our library users want and are delighted to offer this new service.

"We now live in an age where some people like to access information through a variety of different ways. This service will really complement and enhance the traditional library service we provide."

Apparently Amazon are very jealous of their Kindles and have not authorised libraries to use ebooks that are compatible, unfortunately. There are some publishers that won't release ebooks either. Hopefully that will change.

I imagine that in a few years physical libraries will disappear, and all books will come via e-readers.

You either need to jailbreak your Kindle or sell it and buy a reader made by anyone but Amazon. Amazon don't support the open EPUB standard while everyone else does. They want to control what you read, where you buy and what you pay. I prefer the PSR series reader.
