Philip's role with Wilton Windmill ends

Council officer Philip Durston is retiring after playing a big part in the renovation and upkeep of Wilton Windmill – Wiltshire’s only working windmill.

Wiltshire Council owns the windmill and works closely with Wilton Windmill Society. It works on bank holiday weekends producing flour pretty much as it did when first built in 1821.

Peter Lemon – whose late father David played a major part in the restoration of the mill, which was completed in 1976 – said: “To ensure the mill has been a success there has been a close liaison between Philip Durston and John Talbot (past chairman of Wilton windmill society).”

Before officially retiring as structural engineer for Wiltshire Council, Mr Durston visited the mill for a final time as a council officer.

Mr Durston became involved in the upkeep of the mill as the structural engineer for the council’s property services section before moving on to become facilities manager.

He worked with Mr Talbot for many years and was invited to become an honorary member of the windmill society.

Mr Lemon said: “Philip Durston has worked tirelessly for Wiltshire Council throughout his career and through his efforts and expertise he has ensured that Wilton Windmill is one of his legacies.”
