A team of paranormal investigators is looking for new members to help solve the mysteries of things that go bump in the Wiltshire night.

Wiltshire Phenomena Research, which looks into reports of ghosts and UFOs from the public, was set up in 2006 and has members throughout the county, including in Chippenham and Devizes.

The group is now looking to boost its numbers.

Hayley Stevens, 23, co-founder of the group, said: “We are looking for people who are open-minded. There are no criteria about what your beliefs are.

“Whether you believe in ghosts or UFOs, or not, has no bearing on whether you can join. And there are no particular qualifications, just that you have an interest in the paranormal.

“It is also important that you don’t mind walking through fields or being out in the dark, because that is where much of our work takes place.”

The role of paranormal investigator involves visiting sites where reports of strange activity have occurred and attempting to find a reasonable explanation.

Miss Stevens, who describes the group as Scooby Doo meets Jonathan Creek, said: “If someone reports something to us we don’t enter into an investigation thinking it must be paranormal, we look at rational causes for what they have witnessed.

“The group is made up of different ages so there’s a good mix.”

Miss Stevens, 23, of Bradford on Avon, who is an arts marketing officer by day, said: “It isn’t like what you see on the television.

“We don’t go around with gadgets or machines that supposedly detect ghosts.

“We try to recreate the conditions of when the sighting happened and see if we can find a logical reason for it.”

The former pupil of The John of Gaunt School, in Trowbridge, has investigated Corsham Tourist Information Office, the George and Dragon pub in Erlestoke and the Running Horse pub in Swindon.
