People are invited to have a say on potential sites for sustainably managing Wiltshire and Swindon’s rubbish over the next 15 years.
Wiltshire Council is working with Swindon Borough Council on preparing a waste site allocation plan as part of the overall waste local development framework.
A number of key policy documents have now been adopted by the councils – including the Waste Core Strategy.
These documents, along with the site allocations plan combine to set out how the councils propose to manage waste in the future.
The councils consulted on a list of potential waste sites in March 2006.
Since that time changes to Government rules have led to the need for the councils to reconsider the list of potential sites as part of preparing the final element of the framework.
A total of 52 sites are considered potentially suitable for accommodating waste uses including recycling, landfill and waste treatment facilities.
There are 14 sites located in the north Wiltshire area, ten sites in the south, 12 in the east and nine in the west Wiltshire area.
There are also seven sites located within the Swindon Borough Council area.
These have been re-assessed against a range of environmental and sustainability criteria.
People can take part in the latest consultationon via the Wiltshire and Swindon waste site allocations document.
The consultation document contains a detailed list of sites and suggested waste uses. The councils would like to hear from people, organisations and companies who have local knowledge of the area to help understand and address the likely range of issues associated with each site.
John Brady, cabinet member for economic development, planning and housing, said: “The identification of sites is still work in progress as we continue to take into consideration the views of local communities before a final decision is made.”
People can view and comment on the consultation document on-line via the link below.
A hard copy can be requested be calling 01225 713429.
The consultation closes on March 17, 2010.
