The possibility of ASDA coming to Chippenham looked slimmer this week after the owners of Langley Park, Ashtenne Industrial Fund Limited Partnership, were refused application at the Royal Courts of Justice.
Lord Justice Pill at the Court of Appeal dismissed Ashtenne's application to appeal the August 2008 decision of the planning inspector to dismiss its March 2007 planning application.
The application was for a mixed use scheme incorporating 192 homes and a 52,000 sq.ft. ASDA foodstore at Langley Park.
A spokespman for Ashtenne said: "Ashtenne remains committed to stimulating the substantial regeneration and improvement of this gateway area of Chippenham, by redeveloping the obsolete and vacant areas of the former Westinghouse Brakes complex.
"Negotiations are already well advanced in respect of a heavily revised mixed use scheme, incorporating a much reduced retail provision. "A revised planning application for 220 dwellings and a smaller foodstore of 38,000 sq.ft. was submitted in February this year. The new scheme addresses the criticisms raised against the previous scheme relating to urban design and density. "This planning application is still lodged with the Council and discussions continue between the parties."
A Facebook group supporting the possibility of an ASDA in the town has already been set up by local people and so far has almost 800 members.
