Swearing Calne pair fined

Father and son Philip and Darren Barber have walked free from court after pleading guilty to threatening Police Community Support Officers in Calne earlier this year.

Philip Barber, 51, of Braemor Road, Calne, and Darren Barber, 26, of Westwells, Neston, were given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £60 costs each after appearing in North West Wiltshire Magistrates on Friday.

The court heard they were arrested, with Mr Barber Snr’s younger son Dominic, 19, after verbally abusing the PCSOs who were called to their home in Braemor Road after reports of them playing loud music in their car.

Richard Thomas, prosecuting, said: “The incident took place on the afternoon of April 4, when PCSOs attended Braemor Road in Calne following reports of loud music being played from a motor vehicle parked outside their home address.

“Both PCSOs were subjected to a torrent of verbal abuse.”

When the PCSOs called for help, the men continued to verbally abuse the officers and were eventually arrested.

Moses Tawo, defending, said: “Philip has said that the swear words recorded by the police officers are not the sort of words he would use. He said he did say a few things he regrets.

“The fact still remains that he accepts the fact he was out of order and that is reflected in how guilty he feels.”

Dominic Barber, of Braemor Road, pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour but denied a charge of assaulting a police officer. He was remanded on bail until on October 6.

Sergeant Phil Connor of Calne police said they were pleased with the results of the case so far. He said: “This is a clear example that we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour from any residents in Calne. We will continue to take positive action against anyone who uses threatening or abusive behaviour in our community.”
