St Mary’s Church

The sun shone brightly for the wedding of our benefice lay reader Scott Hulland to Audrey Lauder at Bishop’s Cannings Church on March 21.

The bride looked lovely in a full length dress and jacket made of deep purple, shot silk and was attended by her three daughters, Carolyn, Angela and Becky, all dressed in deep pink silk full length dresses, and by her granddaughter, Issy, dressed in an ankle length white organza dress. Not to be outdone, Scott and his best man, Norman Bailey, looked resplendent in dinner suits, Scott wearing a white jacket, and both sporting purple bow ties matching the bride’s outfit.

The church was full with guests for the marriage service which included Holy Communion. After the service, with the bells ringing, Scott and Audrey left for a reception at the Shaw House Hotel in Melksham.

At 10am on Sunday, Palm Sunday, there will be a Liturgy of Palms and Family Communion.

School news

Deputy headmaster Tom Hill, who has been acting headmaster at Easton Royal School since September, has been appointed headteacher at a school in Trowbridge and so will not be returning to Bishop’s Cannings.

The school is very sorry to see him go and there will be an opportunity to say a proper goodbye in the summer. The school is advertising for a deputy headteacher to start in September.

All are welcome to the school’s Easter service in St Mary’s tomorrow at 9.30am.

PCC Meeting

The Parochial Church Council discussed several events, including a tractor ride round the parish on May 17, Rogation Sunday, and a new event, Pints of View, at which people will be invited to put questions to Bishop Stephen, Bishop of Ramsbury in the Hour Glass Inn on June 18. This is part of the Believing In Devizes initiative.

WI

The AGM will take place on Wednesday at Bishop’s Cannings Village Hall at 2.30pm.

Friends of Bishop’s Cannings Church

At the AGM held last week the existing officers were re-elected. Money raised last year totalled £1,837 and this will be transferred to St Mary’s Church fabric fund. Forthcoming events include a Bath University Choir concert in the church at 6pm on May 3, the Merry Wives of Windsor, also in the church, at 7.30pm on June 20 and a tennis tournament in Horton on August 23.

Dog owners

There have been several cases lately of dog owners not cleaning up after their animals in the Davies Drive area. The main problem is that dogs are being allowed to foul around the point where the school bus picks up and drops off.

There is also a problem on the grass opposite the bus stop, where children play.
