Wiltshire pubs aid hospice

The Millstream at Marden and Castle Combe Golf Club are among Wiltshire hostelries taking part in a fundraising scheme in aid of Age Concern Wiltshire.

In The Great Sunday Lunch, taking place on Sunday October 19, participating pubs will invite guests to contribute to Age Concern’s funds.

It is a part of a national initiative thought up by Age Concern England.

Emily Cole from Age Concern said: “We have approached local pubs and restaurants to host a Great Sunday Lunch and raise money for Age Concern Wiltshire by asking customers for a donation.”

So far, 12 pubs have signed up to host the event. As well as the Millstream and Castle Combe Golf Club, there are the Shaw Country Hotel and Restaurant near Melksham, The Old Bear Inn at Staverton, The Polebarn in Trowbridge, the Biddestone Arms near Chippenham, The Black Horse at Cherhill, Beechfield House Hotel at Beanacre, The White Hart at Atworth and The Lamb at Edington.

But amateur chefs can join in as well. Age Concern is urging supporters to host a Sunday lunch at their homes, and asking guests to contribute to Age Concern’s coffers.

One Wiltshire resident, the star actor Nigel Havers, said: “Sunday Lunch is greatest of all British institutions. It is the basis of family life, while providing the menu that sustains us for the rest of the week.

“Talk, eat, discuss, eat some more - great!”
