MORE than 10,000 crocus corms were planted in Devizes on Saturday as a symbolic gesture to raise awareness of the fight against polio.
Devizes Rotarians continued their tradition of planting purple crocus as part of Rotary's work to immunise children and help fund the world-wide eradication of the disease.
Devizes Rotary president Alan Martin and other members were joined by Devizes Mayor Nigel Carter to plant the corms on The Green.
Mr Martin said: "With the cooperation of Devizes Town Council and groundsman, more than 10,000 purple flowering crocus corms were planted as Devizes Rotarians continue to support their own charity, The Foundation of Rotary International, through the purchase of the crocus corms and enhance the display of spring flowers on The Green."
Polio remains endemic in just two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, with just seven cases reported to date this year. But millions of children continue to be vaccinated as countries throughout the world must be free from the polio virus for a year, before the battle can said to be won.
