Gerald Smith

The funeral of retired green grocer Gerald Smith who lived in Forest Dale Road, Marlborough will be held on Monday 10th July at 11am at St Mary’s Church.

Gerald who’s family used to run the fruit and veg shop in the High street passed away peacefully on Sunday 25th June at home surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was a well-known and respected personality within the town, a real gentleman.

He was born 76 years ago above his parents fruit and veg shop on London road, where he lived with parents and siblings Patricia, Colin and Richard. He went into the family business at the age of 15 years straight from school to carry on the family tradition, which started with his Grandfather before him. He met his wife Dorothy over the garden wall there.

He had a little van which he sold his fruit and veg from that would travel around the town and villages for a while, as well as working from the back of the house in Elcot lane.

Gerald and Dot went on to have their children Julie and Tim and was very proud when also at the age of 15 Tim joined the business too.

Gerald, Tim, Jack and other family members worked on the market for many years come rain or shine.

He loved the theatre and travelled around enjoying many shows.

After retiring from the shop Gerald loved spending time in the garden, and the odd trip to the races.

His greatest pleasure was watching his family growing with Carl and Sarah joining, then the Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

Whilst in retirement and with the passing of Dot he decided he would like to help

Others by becoming a volunteer driver for Link, which he enjoyed so much.

A close friendship developed into a companionship with Maureen and they enjoyed many trips and adventures together.

After a short illness of just 9 weeks from diagnosis he sadly passed away from Cancer.

The family would like to thank all the nursing staff that met Gerald and the care of the ladies from Prospect especially Linda who was amazing at his time of need.

He will be so missed by everyone who knew him.

The town will miss him too.
