POLICE have been out on the streets of Marlborough and Pewsey reminding locals to be aware of home security to avoid falling victim to burglars: homes, garden sheds and businesses in and around the area have been hit by thieves during recent weeks.

Officers from the East Community Policing Team, who also visited Devizes, were out and about accompanied by the Bobby Van Trust.

PCSO Melissa Camilleri said: “We needed to get the message out there regarding burglaries so we thought we would take the message to the public rather than them coming to us. We want people to be vigilant and encourage residents to report any suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood, whether that’s suspicious vehicles or people acting in a suspicious manner. It may only be small bits of information, but combined with information from others, it can often help us build up a picture of what, if anything, is going on and who is responsible.

“People were generally very responsive – we gave leaflets out about home security and educated people about some of the steps they can take. Obviously we don’t want people to be alarmed, just mindful and vigilant.”

Mick Leighfield, Bobby Van Operator, said: “The Bobby Van Trust provides a free home security service for older, vulnerable and disadvantaged people. It’s always good to get out in the community and be proactive – we’ve been able to make several referrals. We now also give advice around cyber safety and the public are always very receptive to this.”
