MUSIC fans young and old converged on Scratch the Surface Records in Chippenham to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Record Store Day.

The annual event celebrates independent music shops and vinyl records, with stores across the country holding special giveaways and discounts on their products.

“It was a fantastic day, very successful and we had hundreds of people all through the day,” said Scratch the Surface owner, Simon Heaney.

“The whole point of the day is to support your local shop and we had people from Chippenham, Calne and Malmesbury come in.

“The youngest person we had was about ten-years-old and the oldest was 70, so there was a real mix of age’s groups and demographics.”

Scratch the Surface Records opened less than two years ago but has already based itself in a larger premises on The Causeway due to higher demand for stock.

All vinyl on Saturday (April 22) was 20 per cent off and there were giveaway and offers, including a signed Jarvis Cocker turntable which is still for sale at £750 and one of only four produced.

“Streaming is the main way that people digest music but people still like to own a physical copy,” added Mr Heaney.

“I think in ten or fifteen years from now the only way that people will digest music is through streaming while they are on the move and then when they want the physical copy through vinyl.

“The vinyl fightback has really good momentum, it never really disappeared but has managed to become trendy again.

“Everyone seems to be getting it out or if they sold it are buying their old one’s back.”
