A TRIP to the House of Commons beckons for Year 6 pupils at St Michael's School in Aldbourne after MP Claire Perry was thoroughly impressed by their debating skills.

On Friday Ms Perry spent the morning at the school, where she enjoyed a tour of the place, spoke to many of the pupils, staff and governors there and met some Year 6 children for a democracy themed session.

Here they had to debate issues on the importance of homework, both for and against, and also got a chance to ask her questions about her job and issues that impact Aldbourne residents but also further afield.

And after getting the nod of approval from the MP, she has said they are more than welcome to be given a tour of the House of Commons some time this year.

"It is a really positive trip and the kids get a lot out of it. They have written her letters saying that they were inspired by her which was lovely," said headteacher Judith Arkwright.

"They loved her point of his, big changes start with small steps, so many were keen to go away and make a difference."

Ms Perry said: "It was an absolute pleasure to meet the governors, children and teachers at St Michael’s School last Friday. I enjoyed a tour of the school with pupils, was fascinated by the incubating duck eggs and had a lively discussion with Year 6 during which we had our very own Commons debate.

"I was particularly impressed with the school’s commitment to sport and healthy activity and was so impressed to see the pupils and teachers running their daily mile around the playground.”
