AFTER Year 6 pupils at St Joseph's penned letters to Donald Trump about his plans to build a wall between Mexico and America, MP Claire Perry popped by the school for a healthy debate on the topic.

The letters that the pupils wrote were also sent to Ms Perry and she joined them on Friday at the Devizes primary school to talk about this issue, Brexit and she also gave them an insight into what life is like in the House of Commons.

The pupils were tasked with presenting a balanced argument on the subject, which included national security, finances and immigration.

Ms Perry also shared their letters, which were sent off to the President in November, with Boris Johnson and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office replied, much to the delight of the pupils.

"We had a really informative and interesting debate. The pupils did a great job at putting forward a balanced argument, which Claire Perry was very impressed with," said the school's assistant headteacher, Laura Willcox.

"The children have loved this project and having the responses really helped with their motivation as it gave their writing a purpose.

"When we received the letter in the beige envelope, which had a stamp with The House of Commons, they were so excited and determined to do the best job they could - they all did really well and thought outside the box on an issue that they would not necessarily agree with.

"She mentioned that we could maybe go to the House of Commons one time which would be amazing."

Ms Perry added: "It was wonderful to visit the children and staff at St Joseph’s School in Devizes.  We discussed the brilliant letters that they wrote to Donald Trump about his plans to build a wall between America and Mexico and I was so impressed by their thoughtful questions.

"I have invited the children to visit me in Parliament and I am looking forward to hearing more about the school’s exciting plans for the future."
