AN American town twinned to Calne has offered its congratulations to the town council and the Bible Society for breaking a Guinness World Record last year.

The Caln Township Board of Commissioners read a proclamation congratulating the people of Calne for breaking the record for the Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene on Saturday, December 3.

The proclamation, read at their meeting on December 15, states: "The Board of Commissioners of Caln Township, Chester County Pennsylvania, United States of America wishes to send congratulations to their twin of Calne, Wiltshire England.

"On December 3, 2016, the people of Calne, Wiltshire, England in coordination with Bible Society arranged a happening that included 1,254 residents to perform a live nativity that resulted in obtaining recognition from Guinness Book of World Records for exhibiting the Most Living Figures in a Nativity.

"The dedicated residents of Calne participated in the live nativity, demonstrating a wonderful sense of community spirit, holiday cheer and festive admiration."

Calne Township, which was founded by settlers from the county in 1714, has been twinned with Calne since 1982.

Councillor Heather Canfer, chair of the Calne and District Twinning Association, said: "We would like to thank our American twinned town for celebrating Calne's achievement in this way and sharing the success of an event that put out town in the spotlight nationally."
