FOUR pupils from Hardenhuish School took their classroom learning into the real world by presenting a project to one of Chippenham’s largest businesses.

Eleanor Moor-Bardell, Austin Coleman, Lucy Jones and Alex Henrich presented to Chippenham company Siemens, following a nine-month project on the efficiency and suitability of the railway running from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington.

The project allowed the students to meet weekly with engineers from Siemens, including work experience, plus visits to both Reading and Didcot depots where they saw how the trains are manufactured and gained an understanding of the logistics of managing the railway.

The four Year 12 pupils held their presentation last Tuesday (October 18), in front of Siemens’ senior management team, as well as Hardenhuish headteacher, Lisa Percy and Phil Townsend, link governor for science.

Science teacher at Hardenhuish School, Christine Murphy, said: “The project really demonstrated to the students the importance of collaboration and the need to communicate and work effectively as team.

“The students have worked very hard over the last nine months and this was demonstrated by their competency and understanding during the presentation.

“The students produced a fantastic presentation and communicated their ideas surrounding a sustainable rail very effectively.

“They were professional and knowledgeable and were a true asset to Hardenhuish School.”
