DEVIZES School once again proved that records are made to be broken after surpassing last year’s GCSE results.

The school boasted a 60 per cent score in pupils receiving five A*-C grades on Thursday (August 25) when the Year 11s arrived at the school in crowds, eagerly anticipating their marks.

Phil Bevan, head of Devizes School, said: “Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the students, they have shown an excellent commitment to their studies and deserve this success. I would also like to thank all the staff and Leadership for working so hard and passionately to enable this success to happen.

“There are many fabulous individual successes meaning that so many students are fulfilling their ambitions of securing places in Devizes Sixth form, confirming apprenticeships and gaining college places.”

This year’s group of GCSE pupils achieved a 55 per cent pass in English and maths, representing a second consecutive year of improvements for the school.

“The new performance measures mean that we are now reporting the percentage of students achieving the Basics, A*-C in English and Maths, similar to the old measure, and also Progress 8 which measures progress against starting point,” added Mr Bevan.

“We are incredibly pleased with the significantly improved performance of our English and Maths departments, this year they have both met and exceeded their A*-C targets, and in terms of 3 levels of progress have improved by over 10%; For maths this represents a 20% improvement over two years.

“In conjunction with the excellent A-Level results, this is a very positive time for Devizes School and I am really looking forward to an exciting future.”
