A WOMAN was been seriously injured and another hurt after the car they were travelling in collided with a tree on the A346.

Police, fire crews and the air ambulance were all called to the crash near Wet Pits Lane in Ogbourne St Andrew just after 4pm on Tuesday and the road was closed for nearly six hours causing gridlock for motorists.

The female driver of the white Suzuki, who is in her 40s, was taken to hospital by land ambulance suffering with neck, back, shoulder and abdominal pain.

He her passenger, a woman in her 60s, was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious leg injuries.

She was also cut out of the car by fire crews from Marlborough and Swindon using hydraulic cutting equipment.

The road was blocked in both directions and closed by police until around 9.20pm while recovery took place.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday evening: "We received a 999 call just after 4pm to a report of a road traffic collision involving one vehicle which had collided with a tree on the A346. The road is blocked in both directions.

“One woman is reported to be trapped in a vehicle. Fire and ambulance have also been called to the scene.

“The road has been closed between Marlborough and Ogbourne St Andrew. It is likely to remain closed for several hours while the incident is dealt with.”

Motorists reported longs delays in Marlborough, Rockley, Ramsbury, Axford and Wroughton. Buses to and from Marlborough towards Swindon were also delayed by hours.

Because of the traffic chaos some bus passengers heading towards Chiseldon were left stranded in Marlborough High Street as the drivers were diverting their route to Swindon via Avebury.

One person posted on Facebook: “Two police cars, two ambulance cars, another ambulance, a fire engine and the air ambulance are at the scene.

“Stand still traffic, which is slowly starting to move. Been sat here for a good 45 minutes, anyone thinking of coming back to Marlborough on the A346, I would advise you to take an alternative route.”
