DOG owners are being reminded of their responsibilities by Chippenham Police after a victim suffered hand wounds defending his dog from attack.

Police were called out last Wednesday (July 22) following reports that two dogs off their lead attacked a six-year-old Labrador puppy in the area of Pewsham Way.

The owner of the Labrador intervened but suffered a wound to his hand.

Sgt Phil Connor said: “We are receiving an unacceptable number of reports of irresponsible dog owners and this is a timely opportunity to remind dog owners of the new legislation which makes it an offence for any dog to be out of control in a public or private place and to put any person in fear of that dog or cause them harm.

“We advise anyone who has any concerns about their dog possibly showing signs of being vicious to other dogs or humans to keep their dog muzzled, preferably on a lead.”

Dogs that are out of control or dog on dog bites are normally dealt with by Wiltshire Council’s public protection team however if any person is injured this becomes a matter for the police to investigate.

Careless owners can receive a maximum sentence of two years or a fine under section three of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
