A CONVENIENCE shop in Chippenham, MS2 Stores, is overwhelmed by the response of local people after setting up collection for disaster victims in Nepal.

After two earthquakes in the past few weeks, on April 25 and May 12, thousands of people in the country have died with even more injured and homeless.

To help these people shop owners, Darren Sharma and his wife Renu, have been running a collection point in the shop for donations for the disaster victims.

He said: “We started collecting last week with people finding out about it through word of mouth.

“The response has been great so far, we have already had five boxes, which are ready to be sent out to Nepal, and we will continue the collection for as long as people give us donations.”

The shop on Greenway Lane is accepting all types of donation, with the only exclusions being electrical items and money.

The idea was from staff member Lorraine Paynes who has worked at the shop for 13 years.

Mrs Payne, 55, said: “We had a lot of people coming in talking about the disaster and so we decided to do a collection here in the shop.

“We have done our own collection as we wanted to make sure the items go to victims who needs and isn’t filtered anywhere else.

“We will take donations of any kind from clothing and blankets to children's toys and games.”

The shop is also looking for help from businesses in the area to pay for the postage of sending the items over to Nepal.
