TRIBUTES have been paid to vets receptionist Karin O'Rourke who died in her sleep on Sunday night.

Ms O'Rourke, 54, of Massey Road, Devizes, who had worked at Estcourt Vets since 2000, was loved by visitors to the surgery as she remembered all the names of both humans and pets and cared about their lives.

Vet Ed Davies said: "Her death has been a terrible shock to all of us. Karin was a real diamond. A one off. She was always happy and smiling and put others first. She is truly irreplaceable. She was the face of the surgery."

Colleagues at the surgery posted a message on Facebook on Monday saying: "It is with great sorrow that we must inform you that our lovely receptionist and dear friend Karin passed away in her sleep on Sunday night.

"As you will appreciate all the staff are devastated and deeply shocked by this dreadful news - please be patient with us at this difficult time.

"We are so sorry to have to pass on this terrible news. Karin was such a good friend to so many of our clients and members of staff alike. She was loved by all of us and will be missed terribly."

Under the description of her on the vet's website it said: "She is Devizes born and bred. She has a spaniel Millie and a terrier Fred-Jeremy. Karin knows more people in Devizes than anyone. She has a keen interest in antiques and attends collector’s fairs."

Ms O'Rourke had a heart complaint but her death was completely unexpected and the coroner has been informed. She leaves long-term partner Michael O'Rourke.

Before joining the vets practice she worked at Rangebourne Pets in New Park Street, Devizes.

Clients and friends took to Facebook to express their distress and remember her as a friend, colleague and animal lover.

Emma Boyd wrote: "Words fail me. I have had the greatest pleasure in working with you closely for the past 10 years and we've had many laughs together; many tears together. I don't think you realised just how much of an asset you were to the team. We miss you so much."

Bettina Jordan-Barber wrote: "She was a fabulous woman and quite simply the best veterinary receptionist I have ever met."

Kim Carter-Bell wrote: "Devastated. Karin was Escourt House Vets."

Gaynor Bush-Alsop wrote: "I can't imagine the surgery without her , she always recognised my voice, knew what I needed before I did."

Jean Orford said: "Karin has been the 'face' of Estcourt Vets for so many years. Always smiling ,welcoming and very sensitive during difficult times."

No funeral details are yet available but will be posted on the Escourt Vets Facebook page when organised with Stuarts in Devizes.
