A CASTLE Combe bike ride this weekend will raise funds for the air ambulance that saved schoolboy Max Chant’s life.

For one day a year schoolchildren get to take over the racing circuit on their bikes for charity.

The event is normally put on by Friends of Brook Valley Primary School in Yatton Keynell, but this year they are handing over the reins to Max’s mum Sadia, while Max and his friends will take part as part of the Back on Track team, a charity set up by his family to mark his recovery.

The ride is taking place on Sunday, one year after a car crash near Yatton Keynell that left Max needing critical care.

The then 10-year-old By Brook pupil was airlifted to Bristol Children’s Hospital for spinal surgery, and had metal rods and screws holding his back in place until December.

Mrs Chant, 40, of Ashe Crescent, Chippenham, said: “I was inspired to do this event by how Max has progressed with his recovery, I honestly didn't think this day would come. Almost a year has passed and Jake and I are so glad to get our son back.

“Max’s sister Emmy still goes to By Brook School. I thought, wouldn’t it be good to open up their sponsored bike ride to all schools and the community.

“You can go round however you like – bike, scoot, skate, skip, rollerblade, run, walk. You can somersault it if you want.”

Julie Smith, who runs Tae Kwon Do classes for children aged four and over, will be giving self-defence demonstrations.

A barbecue is also planned for the turn up on the day event at Castle Combe Circuit, 4-7pm. It is £2.50 per child to go round the track, with free entry into a raffle, and free for adults.
