DEVIZES Fire Station was full fundraisers last Thursday as people took part in a charity coffee morning to raise money and awareness of epilepsy.

The Purple Day event, which raised £430 for UK epilepsy charities, was organised by Laura and Michael Cleaver to support seven-year-old daughter Poppy who was diagnosed with the condition in January.

The couple, of Woodland Way, were able to use the station for the coffee morning as 38-year-old Mr Cleaver is firefighter at the Devizes station.

Mrs Cleaver, 36, who is a teaching assistant at Wansdyke School, said: “This is the first time I have organised an event like this but it went really well and we had more than 30 people come and show their support.

“I wanted to organise it as Poppy was only diagnosed a couple of months ago and when I was researching epilepsy on the internet I saw about Purple Day and decided to get involved.

“One of my other daughters Daisy also took part by spending the day tied to her friend Ella, three legged race style, to raise funds.”

Purple Day is an international effort, held on March 26 each year, where people across the globe are invited to wear purple and host event dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy.

Mrs Cleaver has said she plans to make it an annual event for Purple Day although although next year she is looking to organise a family fun day held on a Saturday instead.
