TEACHERS and staff at a rural North Wiltshire school are celebrating an Ofsted report which has praised “outstanding teaching” and “consistently well behaved” pupils.

Inspector Derek Watts found the Lea and Garsdon CE Primary School to be good and noted that pupils’ “spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness” was a particular strength.

Headteacher Kay Vousden said: “We’re are very pleased with the report. It is the result of a lot of hard work from our excellent teaching staff and governors.”

The Inspector said: “The determined leadership of the headteacher, strong teamwork and effective governance have brought about sustained improvements to teaching and to pupils’ achievements.”

He pointed to pupils’ enthusiasm for learning and their consistently good behaviour, and also to instances of outstanding teaching.

Mr Watts went on: “Teachers establish positive relationships with pupils an expect them to do their best.

“Pupils respond well to their teachers’ high expectations and this results in good learning.”

The 103-pupil village school is attended by children from both villages as well as from Malmesbury and the surrounding area.

Ms Vousden said she and her staff were committed to continued improvements.

She said: “The Inspector remarked that we have very strong team spirit and felt we are a self-improving school.

“We ourselves know what we need to do to take Lea and Garsdon School to the next stage.”
