STUDENTS at Devizes School took part in their own Invictus Games and met gold medallist Andy Phillips.

More than £220 was raised for Help for Heroes, one of the school’s chosen charities, and a representative came to talk about its work.

Students took part in eight events, including blind football, seated volleyball and a wheelchair basketball session.

Event co-ordinator Ali Beck, who is head of PE and health, said: “Having been inspired by the Invictus Games, I was keen to replicate something similar.

“We were very privileged to have Andy Phillips open our Invictus Games and say a few words to our students.”

Mr Phillips, an ex-RAF armourer, suffered a spinal injury in the 1990 Gulf War.

He has taken part in two US National Veterans Wheelchair Games and took gold last summer at the first Invictus Games as part of the archery team.

Associate assistant head Victoria Mackay said: “It was wonderful to see the student’s enthusiasm for trying these sports.”
