A thriving village market celebrated its first anniversary with a specially baked cake and a constant stream of customers on Saturday.

Sherston market takes place once every four weeks – usually the second Saturday of the month – and enjoyed one its best ever days since it was launched a year ago.

The number of stalls inside the village hall was at its capacity of 19 and the next two market days for November and December are already fully booked, which will result in some traders having to set up outside.

A cake was baked for Saturday’s celebration by regular stall holder Gemma Faithfull of Faithfull’s Quality Baking, from Horton in South Gloucestershire.

Martin Rea, one of the market’s organisers, said: “Saturday was one of our best days since we began. Probably the best. There were a lot of people there. They don’t just come from the village, or the Sherston area, but from further afield. It’s quite surprising, really.”

The monthly market was set up as a result of a growing feeling that the village would be able to support such a venture.

The aim was to create a bustling, traditional-style environment where people could acquire a variety of goods and produce.

Mr Rea said: “Sherston is a hub village with a number of smaller villages around it. People from those villages come to Sherston for the post office and shops. We thought they would also come in for a Saturday market – and they certainly have done.”
