Demolition of the old skatepark on Station Road in Calne began this week ahead of the installation of an updated new version.

Diggers moved onto the site earlier this week and should have the old concrete dug up by tomorrow to allow the construction of new ramps and rails at the start of next week.

The new park, which will be built by Bristol company Wheelscape Skateparks, should be completed by December 19, depending on the weather.

Calne town clerk Linda Roberts said: “It’s the culmination of years of hard work of young people and members of the community to assemble enough funding to deliver a skate park worthy of the young people’s skill and enthusiasm.

“I think it’s giving young people something they have been asking for for some time which is an improvement on the bowl they have.”

The construction will be project managed by Calne Town Council.

Town councillor Howard Marshall said: “It’s been a long road, it’s been a struggle but also enjoyable.

“We have been dealing with residents complaints all the way along, but we have brought them with us and mitigated their concerns.”

The skatepark, originally built in 1998 by volunteers, is being redeveloped after a report from engineers Mann Williams said the park was structurally inadequate and repairs were not recommended.
